Cleansing the body and mind with Panchakarma

Known as the mother of all detoxes, the Ayurvedic panchakarma process of cleansing ultimately purifies all body tissues and systems at a very deep level. Panchakarma removes excess Doshas and correct imbalances while eliminating any harmful Ama (toxins) out of your body Dhatus (tissues) through the Shrotas (channels) and ultimately into elimination (skin, sweat glands, lungs, and colon). The entire process is tailored specifically to meet your unique needs and to treat and detox specific imbalances and build up of Ama.

Step 1 Initial consultation

In the consultation we establish a suitable level and length of detox. In certain cases a process focusing on rejuvenation will be recommended depending on your strength and state of Ojas. Following the initial consult, herbal medicine will be recommended so as to start the detox process and loosen the Ama, lodged in the various tissues.

Step 2 Deepana Pachana

You will be given a specific spice mix to take daily before food to prepare and build your Agni (digestive fire) to better digest Ama (toxins) when they are released from your tissues. Diet needs to be monitored and certain foods such as coffee, alcohol, sugar and meat are eliminated. This process takes about 6-10 days, depending on your current health.

Through Deepana Pachana the process of detoxification starts. A specifically tailored detox to prepare for panchakarma may be recommended.

Step 3  Accumulation Ghee intake

Medicated ghee is administered for 3 to 4 days in increasing intervals to help collect the Ama (toxins). For vegans, coconut oil can be used for this process. Toxins expelled from the body are attracted to fats and oils. They are mainly stored in our adiposed (fatty) tissue. The Ghee collects and brings them to colon for elimination.

Personally designed diet guidelines are provided for your Panchakarma diet which includes foods such as Kitchari moong dhal soup, vegetables, moong dhal and basmati rice with dosha correcting spices and alkalising vegetables. This mono diet regime allows the digestive system to be calm and relaxed to freely detox.

Step 4  Purvakarma

Purvakarma is very pleasant and a relaxing part of the journey which occurs in the clinic. Pre-panchakarma oil and steam treatments usually daily for 5 days but can be tailored for your individual needs.

Snehana oil massages followed by Swedana steam treatments are administered to help loosen the Ama (toxins), clear the Shrota (channels) and to pacify Vata. Traditional Ayurvedic treatments such as Shirodhara, Kati Basti, Pinda Sweda, Nasya etc are an essential part of the treatment period.

Step 5 Purgative therapies

Purgative therapies may be used to evacuate and fully expel congestion and include the following:

  • Vamana induced vomiting can be used to expel Kapha out of the chest, head, throat, sinuses. Use in congestion of chest, asthma, bronchitis etc. However vamana is optional and not routinely offered in this clinic.

  • Virechana bowel cleansing therapy - a medicated oil is used to purge for one day to expel all toxins that have been collected to this stage through the previous therapies. This process clears toxins out of the colon, the mind and emotions. You will feel significantly lighter and clearer afterwards. Only very light soup is had later in day otherwise only warm water is sipped. Expels toxins and pacifies all Doshas especially Pitta.  This therapy is beneficial for skin rashes, heat & inflammation in the system, irritation and agitation, any liver and gall bladder issues, arthritis, hot flushes, digestive problems such as constipation and diarrhoea, hormonal imbalances and menstrual issues (including heavy bleeding, cramping, PMS and water retention). Virechana boosts fertility and longevity and offers great wellbeing in general by promoting proper downward movement of the digestive tract.

  • Anuvasana Basti is a nourishing enema that rejuvenates and calms the entire body. Is especially used to pacify Vata and is given with alternating Niruha Basti during the Panchakarma process. This calming and relaxing treatment uses sesame oil and treats all Vata problems such as stress, insomnia, anxiety, sciatica, lower back pain, dryness internally and externally, fatigue, debility, pain and failure to thrive.

  • Niruha Basti is an enema treatment using a herbal concotion with sesame oil that is traditionally administered alternating days with Anuvasana Basti. Toxins are drawn out of the colon to clear all the Ama (toxins) that have been loosened. Generally requires a process of 5 to 8 days with alternating Bastis (or longer if required). Niruha Basti is best used following a Virechana purgation. Treats all Vata issues such as lower back aches, sciatica, lack of energy, fatigue, insomnia, stress, adrenal stress, hormonal imbalance, period pain and irregularity, feeling of heaviness and bloating. A course of bastis can also be used to relieve symptoms in parkinsons and dementia and other diseases and abilities of the mind.

  • Nasya karma is a process of administering medicated oil into the nose to clear the sinuses, congestion, sinusitis, hay fever, headaches, treats vocal cords, and certain throat issue. Great for clarity of mind and memory.

“I completed a Panchakarma seasonal detox program with Karina. The only regret  I have is to have waited for decades before giving my body the ultimate gift of rejuvenation.

I feel grounded, calm and I am amazed at the amount of energy and clarity I have. Oh and yes! I am able to fall asleep at a reasonable time and not wake until morning. I am so grateful I gave myself this life changing experience. Thank you Karina for your healing touch.
